(Keep in mind, FODMAP stands for “fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols,” they usually confer with the varieties of carbohydrates that do not get digested or are poorly absorbed2 within the small gut.) Gum usually falls underneath the polyols bucket, as “these are your sugar alcohols,” says Singh. “Your xylitols, your mannitols, sorbitols—all of the issues that say sugar-free on the label, more often than not they are going to have these polyols in them.”
